The Balloon Goes up at Scarecrow Weekend of Straw
September ’08 and again in ’09.
In August ’08 the developer Energy4All erected a 50m anemometer in preparation to building four 125 metre high wind turbines on the hill between Lubenham, Gartree and Market Harborough.
Lubenham is famous for this fun packed Scarecrow themed weekend attracting thousands of visitors from across the east midlands to enjoy our annual community event.
We wanted to see what sort of impact the height of the turbines set on the ridge would have, towering a total of 500 feet above the village.
A blimp balloon - about 20 feet long and 8 feet across at its widest point - was flown at a height of slightly less than 125 metres from the nearest point we could legally obtain access to.
Visitors and villagers expressed shock at the height and closeness of the proposed turbines to so many homes in so many neighbouring settlements.
In some of the pictures the balloon is arrowed to help you quickly find it. Remember, this is just to give an indication of height. The blades from each turbine will sweep more than an acre of sky! It was easily photographed from Harborough.
Back in Lubenham. The blimp is tethered behind the distant hedge.
To give an idea of scale, this is the blimp being launched at another event in nearby Swinford by members of Stop Swinford Windfarm Action Group
